Native American Indian Talking Circles

I am a proud member of the Cherokee Nation and listed on the Cherokee Tribal Roll. I feel a deep connection with the gentle spirit of my Native American Anscestors and I am grateful for their innate natural healing capabilities, wisdom, and reverence for all that is.

NATIVE AMERICAN TALKING CIRCLES

Tipi%20at%20night.jpgThe Native American Culture is unique in many ways including their communication style.

They value cooperation and respect and generally will not make eye contact while the other person is speaking. They will listen with their whole being until the other person is completely finished talking.

Native American tradition includes many rituals that tribal members incorporate into their daily life.

While each member of the tribe sits in a circle, the member that holds the "talking object" is the one that is allowed to speak about anything they wish, including anything that may be bothering them.

While this is occurring, other members are not allowed to comment. Speaking while another individual is "holding the feather" is forbidden.

It is interesting to note that many of today's self help groups that practice "group therapy" follow the same example. It is a method of balanced give and take among human beings that has endured.
